The co-pay for Atripla was $50/month so $600/year. My co-pay to see the specialist is $50 and I would see him once every three months. After a month or two, I got completely used to the medication and it never bothered me again. The few two weeks that I started taking it I had a constant pins and needles sensation in my hands and feet, severe nausea, and the spins. I started off on a single pill treatment called Atripla which took some getting used to. ![]() If I ever get into a relationship, I'll be open and honest about it but that's not something I haven't had to worry about. I honestly have no intention on telling them unless it is medically needed. My family and my best friend don't have any idea either because, even at 28, I'm still in the closet about my own sexuality and telling them that I'm gay and my status would be too much of a shocker. I have only told 4 people about my status at this point. I was diagnosed about 5 years ago and have been on medication since I was diagnosed. Using a throw away because practically everyone I know uses reddit. Interestingly an HIV positive child doesnt mean the mother will become infected either.Īnyways. That said this process is totally legal here, though the liability lies solely on the parents if the baby ends up positive, because all steps were taken to prevent it. An your embryologist cant see whether this has occurred, they just pick the prettiest sperm they can find. This is because the HIV virus can potentially attach itself to the head of the sperm. The chances of infection of the embryo are incredibly incredibly low, but not zero. HOWEVER, and this is probably why it isnt considered safe. Taking a solitary sperm greatly reduces the chances of transfer. ICSI is one single sperm picked up in a super fine needle and injected directly into the egg. Once a low viral load is established, semen is collected, 'washed, and ready for ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). So the whole process actually involves testing the man several times over a certain period to ensure his viral load reaches a minimum threshold considered safe (as the virus is not actively replicating all the time). Not even IVF (in vitro fertilisation - small quantity of sperm into dish with eggs and left to do their own thing) because of risk of virus particles in residual semen. The next important thing is that we never ever 'inseminate' with a positive sample. The only difference with a known HIV sample is that we might put it through a few additional washes with clean media, as typically it is the seminal fluid that transmits the virus. ![]() ALL semen is spun down and sperm put through a 'washing' stage, because regardless of the most recent bloodwork we still treat EVERY sample as if it could potentially contain an infectious agent. I work in embryology and can give some insight, though not in the US.īasically we can/do create embryos with HIV+ sperm, but yes, it must go through 'washing', but this is not an additional step. >!insert spoiler here!< Other subreddits you might like: some Mod posts Serious posts Megathread Breaking news Unfilter Please use spoiler tags to hide spoilers.
